Many sites charge for access to their content, either through a monthly subscription fee or a one-time access fee, while others combine free content with fee-based content. A good example is that of some plr content sites: by charging and limiting membership they ensure their limited numbers of members can have fresh plr material that is not available elsewhere. Combining a free site with a paid member area is not so uncommon, but suitable for only some types of sites. One common type is sites specializing in giving investment, trading or gambling advise. They have a general area but then paid members get the "hot tips", often by email or mobile phone as well as on the members area of a website. Another type is those sites which provide specialist software to paid members, that does some service for them easily, that might otherwise take them time. For other sites paying members may have access to the best content or the most recent research news, with the bonus of having no advertizing in the member area. The content really needs to be unique - not something visitors can easily find by going elsewhere. The web site doesn't lose traffic, but subscribers get "special treatment" and publishers earn income to help pay for the bills!
